Insights Issue 9: An Overview of Tuberculosis (TB) in Nepal

As the second leading infectious killer globally after COVID-19, Tuberculosis (TB) remains a pressing concern in Nepal as well. In the fiscal year 2079/80, Nepal reported 37,447 TB case notifications, with 8% of cases occurring in individuals under 15 years of age, according to National Tuberculosis Program data. Of the total notified cases, 694 cases were found drug-resistant in 2079/80, reflecting the growing complexity of TB treatment. The rise of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) further poses challenges to TB control in the country.
